On May 13, Migrant Voice member Amin spoke to The Guardian in a long read article exploring the failures of the Home Office, including the TOEIC scandal. As part of our #MyFutureBack campaign, we have been fighting for justice for the victims of this scandal: tens thousands of international students wrongly accused of cheating in an English language test required to renew their visa, their lives subsequently turned upside down.
Amin told The Guardian about his harrowing experiences as a victim of the TOEIC scandal, from being detained in an early morning raid in 2015 to winning a five-year battle against the Home Office's decision to revoke his visa, which Migrant Voice helped him fight.
"I asked one officer ‘Could you please tell me: do you think I can’t speak English?'" Amin told The Guardian of the moment he was arrested.
"He said: 'Listen mate, I don’t know what’s going on at the Home Office, but your name is flagged on our system.'"
Amin went on to describe how his father initially did not believe that his son was innocent because he had such faith in the UK legal system.
"When I spoke to him about this situation he said: ‘No way would they do this if you hadn’t done anything wrong,'" said Amin of his father's reaction.
