Migrant Voice Network West Midlands Autumn Event, hosted by The Institute for Research into Super diversity (IRiS) at the University of Birmingham will take place on October 24th, 2016.

10.30 – 12.00 Panel discussion – Migration: opportunities in the new landscape
This panellists will look at the situation around the surge in hate crimes; what are the challenges in terms of migrants’ rights and what are the opportunities for us; how can we respond as communities, build new alliances, create positivity;

12.45 – 1.45 Workshops – developing the messages and agreeing actions (choose one) (3 running concurrently and repeated twice)
The workshops will explore how we address and respond to these issues, and come up with concrete actions and messages. Participants will chose between one of the workshops:
Workshop 1: Dealing with hate crime and xenophobia. (Facilitated by Ghiyas Somra, BRAP)
Hate crimes have increased, but have previously gone unreported. How can we respond as communities? How do we gather the data and use it strategically to hold people to account. How do we help people report? How do we work with schools, the police, and other stakeholders?
Workshop 2: What are the challenges for migrants’ rights / what can we do about it to engage? (Facilitated by Don Flynn, Migrants Rights Network)
What are the opportunities in the coming years for migrants to take part in shaping the post Brexit landscape; how do we build new alliances; what are the platforms and opportunities for migrants to push for their rights?
Workshop 3: Working with the Media – how do we make our voices heard? (TBC)
The interactive workshop will look at how best to get our stories and messages from the event into the media using different tools and media platforms.
