Join us for a national network meeting to look at the upcoming e-visa system coming into effect from December 2024.
The meeting will take place on Tuesday 25 June, from 5.30-7.00pm online on Zoom.
All biometric cards and residence permits must be updated to digital status by December 31, 2024. At this meeting we will hear from experts on what this means for those who have to change their status, and we will hear from those affected directly.
We will discuss the wider implications of this latest change to a ‘digital only status’, hearing from others who have worked on issues arising with right to rent and right to work checks, on challenges proving status for those waiting for visa renewals, and on issues for European Citizens with proving status on the Settlement scheme.
We will also look at the wider positives/negatives around a digital only status, the risks of not being able to prove status, electronic systems not working, bias built into systems, and surveillance and tracking issues of the ‘digital border’.
Finally, we will look at lessons learned from the Windrush scandal and what happens when it is not possible to prove status.
Speakers include:
Zoe Bantleman, Legal Director, Immigration Law Practitioners' Association, will give us an overview of what the new policy means and the issues that may arise in practice for individuals who are moving to digital-only immigration status.
Monique Hawkins, Policy and Research Officer, the3million, will speak about the lessons (not) learned from the problems with implementation of digital status in the EUSS.
Bethan Lant, Advocacy, Training & Development Manager at Praxis, will speak about how the move to digital status is affecting the communities they work with.
Reece Colley, Casework Team Manager at the Refugee and Migrant Centre, who will share RMC's experience with eVisas so far and the different ways this transition to digital status affects their service users
Olivia Ndoti, Founder and CEO of Women Integration Network (WIN)
Ramya Jaidev, Windrush Lives
David Forbes, Lifeline Options and steering group member of Migrant Voice's visa fees campaign will speak about the potential challenges of the e-visa implementation
