Migrant Voice - Media training day in Birmingham

On Tuesday 1 October, we will be holding our first media training day for "migrant ambassadors" and for staff/volunteers at refugee and migrant community organisations in the West Midlands. The training is part of our pioneering Meet a Migrant project, which is now into the second phase.

In this training, you’ll learn how to identify stories in your community and how to pitch them to the media.

We’ll be sharing our learning from ten years of working with migrants and the media, and from the first phase of Meet a Migrant, where we brought migrants and journalists together to explore issues and develop media stories.

The training is from 10am to 4.30pm at Unison, 19th Floor, The Mclaren Building, 35 Dale End, Birmingham, B4 7LN. It’s free and includes lunch and refreshments. Booking is required as places are limited.

Sessions include:
- Key lessons from Phase 1 of Meet a Migrant
- Refining and writing your pitch
- Interview techniques

Participants will get a copy of our media toolkit and information about how to contact journalists in the West Midlands.

You will be asked to come prepared with a story idea or an issue affecting your community that you want to raise in the media.

Who this training is for:

  • Are you active in your community, feel passionate about changing the debate on migration, and concerned about the lack of migrant voices in the media?

If so, this is for you. Migrant Voice is looking for proactive migrants who are keen to develop their skills and knowledge in getting the voices and issues of their communities into the media.

You’ll become one of our migrant ambassadors – and this training day is the start of that process. As an ambassador, you will get plenty of follow-up mentoring and support too, as you start to pitch stories from your community.

You will also become part of our national network of migrant ambassadors and be able to share experiences and learning with them, as well as having access to future media training activities to further build your skills.

  • Are you part of a migrant or refugee-led community group or organisation? Would you like to learn from Migrant Voice’s experience in getting migrant stories into the media?

Then this training is for you. You’ll hear about our experiences, about what works and what doesn’t, and have the chance to develop pitches for your own stories. You’ll also receive follow-up support when pitching your first story.

A maximum of two people per organisation can attend, who can then share the learnings with their colleagues and wider membership.
