Migrant Voice - Media training day in London

On Friday 24 January, 10am-4.30pm, we are running a media training day for migrant and refugee organisations as part of our Meet a Migrant project.

At Migrant Voice, we've been working to get migrant voices into the media for almost ten years and we’re now running training days to share our learning with other groups and organisations who work with migrants and refugees.

At the training, we will share our learning from the first phase of our pioneering Meet a Migrant project, where we brought migrants and journalists together to explore issues and develop media stories. You’ll hear about our experiences, about what works and what doesn’t when dealing with the media, and have the chance to refine and write pitches for your own stories and practise doing interviews.

You’ll also get our Meet a Migrant toolkit, information about how to contact media in London, and receive follow-up support when pitching your first story.

The training is free and includes lunch and refreshments. Booking is required as places are limited. A maximum of two people per organisation can attend, who can then share the learnings with their colleagues and wider membership. Since we are prioritising migrants and refugees for this training, we do ask that, if you are booking two spots, one of them will be taken by someone with a migrant background. If none of those from your organisation interested in attending have such a background, we can only offer one space.

The training will take place at Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, 5th Floor Kings Place, 90 York Way, London N1 9AG.

You’ll be asked to come prepared with a story idea or an issue affecting your community or someone you work with that you want to raise in the media.

Participants will benefit from the first-hand experience of those running the training: Migrant Voice Founder and Director, Nazek Ramadan; myself (a former journalist); and Daniel Nelson, who has 50 years’ experience working in the media.

We know there are a lot of stories and voices among migrant communities that are missing from the mainstream media in London, but we also know that it can be hard to know how to pitch your ideas to journalists.

This training gives you practical tips on how to do that. We have already run two very successful training days in Birmingham and Glasgow. Here’s some feedback from those sessions:

“I always shy away from [pitching stories]. Now I know there’s no need to shy away. I feel prepared.”

“I loved the pitch-writing exercise”

“The first-hand experiences from Migrant Voice and media professionals was great”

We’re really excited to keep sharing our learning with migrant communities and organisations across the country.

If you would like to book one or two places at the training day on Friday 24 January, or if you want to find out more, please contact [email protected].

The Meet a Migrant project is funded by the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.
