Migrant Voice - Meeting on EU referendum & EU migrants Birmingham

Migrant Voice is organising a series of meetings, media labs and discussions for migrants to make their views heard on the upcoming UK referendum on the EU and how it would impact on our lives.

The Migrant Voices for Change network in Birmingham held a meeting and discussion on April 7th from 6-8.30pm at the Birmingham and Midland Institute, 9 Margaret Street, Birmingham B3 3BS.

Roger Casale, founder and executive director of New Europeans, shared with us the perspective of his organisation on the UK EU referendum debate and the impact and challenges for communities at this time.

This was followed by a discussion on the impact of the referendum debate, in particular the following topics.

  • How do you feel about the way the debate is taking place at the moment?
  • What may be the impact on EU migrants of staying in/out – and what are our concerns?
  • EU migrants won’t be allowed to vote in the referendum – how do you feel about this, and how can we make our voices heard in other ways?
  • How do we use this debate as an opportunity to strengthen solidarity between EU migrants?
  • Agreeing activities and action plans

A number of actions were agreed at the meeting. This meeting will be followed by Migrant Media Labs on April 20th and 27th from 3-8pm with opportunities to follow up on actions from the meeting and to produce videos, letters to the editor, blogs, etc.
